A quiet time – Part 2

What are the essential pieces of a quiet time? A one-word answer is P.R.A.Y.

Preparation.

Routine.

Assignment.

You.

ASSIGNMENT

Ephesians 2:8-10

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Scripture tells me each and every day is important to God (see Psalm 84:10). Scripture also tells me each and every person is valuable to God (see Luke 2:10).  Knowing this, I should view each day and every encounter as a potentially influential moment for God. Every one of us has been placed at this place for this moment for the workings of God’s eternal plan (see Esther 4:14).

Yet it is so easy to forget the true worth of both a day and a person when I am focused on simply surviving until tomorrow. I need His perspective daily so I can see what’s really important for this day and this person. And the best way for me to gain His perspective is to seek Him in prayer and in the Word, be it a phrase, verse, chapter, or book. He speaks; it’s my job to listen.

YOU

Psalm 42:1-2

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the Living God. When can I go and meet with God?

I admit I’m jealous of those Christians who seem to live those verses from Psalms.  Those Christians who: hunger for God’s Presence in their lives; yearn to see God magnified in their days; and live for nothing or no one except God, each and every day.  People with their hearts in heaven with God and their heads on earth for God. People who love radically, give exuberantly, and forgive gratefully to any and all without hesitation.

People who expect nothing in return from people since they’re already all filled up by God.  They indeed live in the overflow of joy from God in lives that look vastly different from the ordinary (see Romans 15:13). However, the one common thing I’ve found in questioning those Christians about their lives is that they daily meet with God on their knees in prayer and in the Word in worship. They make the choice to seek God every day. And there in the seeking, they find life with Him to be simply beyond words.

And that choice is available for me and for you, today…
