thy kingdom come part 1

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven has remained on my lips and resonated in my heart more and more recently (Matthew 6:10 BRG). This idea has become a near-constant meditation and prayer breathed in and out of my soul.

Many who’ve come before me have felt and done the same with Matthew 6:10 in prayer and in choices with their days. Not just regular, expected or planned for days. But days full of loss with pain and love with purpose alongside grief without end and goodness for endurance. Days lived knowing their strength will never be enough while God’s sufficiency will prevail.

And because of their steady returning over and again to faith in God and God alone, folks just like you and me have experienced the extraordinary. Not just the extraordinary people paint, write, or sing about. But the extraordinary that only God knows about until His kingdom is come.

For this kind of extraordinary is upside-down in our world just like God’s kingdom is upside-down to our world. An upside-down marked by humility and the doing of less-than-honorable tasks of washing feet and wiping tears.1 An upside-down marked by hope amidst horrific suffering and courage amidst circumstances which declare defeat. An upside-down marked by the choosing to proclaim of Christ and the constancy to prevail for Christ.

For in God’s kingdom, the humble are rewarded and the helpless regarded, the lost saved and the lonely set in families. All these actions are carried out by God Himself with the mercies made new each morning He provides and lavish love He gives. For, Yes! Great is His faithfulness (see Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV & 1 John 3:1).

1 One of the most vivid pictures I’ve seen of selfless acts of honoring Jesus by helping the least of these was done by one of the pastors at my church years ago. My pastor was in conversation with one of the special-needs adults in the church lobby before Sunday School. While my pastor was answering one of this man’s many questions, he noticed the man’s shoe was untied. Then, without missing a beat, my pastor asked him, “may I tie your shoe for you?”. At the man’s nod of Yes, my pastor knelt down and tied the shoe. Then he checked the other shoe to make sure it was good and tight, too. When my pastor got to his feet again, he thanked the man for letting him tie his shoe. I’m pretty sure than neither of these men remember that Sunday, but I sure do. And that memory reminds me to always look for those who need my help, especially one of the least of these whom God loves deeply and dearly.
