With today as July 4th and the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States, I think it’s highly appropriate what I’m writing on today is a chapter about the battle against fear and hopelessness for a book about seeing God’s goodness in the midst of cancer.

Knowing that many of you are fighting similar battles in life is why I wanted to share these thoughts with you today. Many of you are in the fight for your lives in cancer and/or love or know someone who is. Or you’re facing another challenge in life that’s far bigger than you.

Remember this: nothing’s too big for God.

Be it wayward children or cancer, unemployment or undiagnosed illness(es), lack of finances, freedom, or faith or an abundance of fear(s), or divorce, death, or denial, or anything else that has dug out a place in defeat or disappointment deep in the soil of our souls.

The real battle in challenges isn’t the challenges.

The real battle in cancer isn’t cancer itself.

Rather, it’s the battle for our minds and hearts in challenges, including cancer. The battle not give in to fear or give up to hopelessness. And the most effective weapon we have in this fight is holding hard to the truths about God’s character in Scripture.

God is our Victorious King against whom no weapon nor enemy can stand (see Isaiah 54:17).

He has already defeated death, hell, and the grave (see 1 Corinthians 15:54-55).

If you’re struggling today to believe God has already won for you in whatever battle you face today, I’d encourage you to stop and pray and ask Him to help. He will bring Scripture to your mind for strength and hope to your heart for faith.

God is listening.

He is there with you, like He’s here with me.

He is ready to help us in unbelief, if we ask (see Mark 9:24).

On that note, if you’re looking for an easy way to find Bible verses which can give strength and hope, biblegateway.com is a free search engine to use for this. And once you’ve found some verses that encourage you deep in the soil of your soul, I’d recommend you write or print them out and put them wherever you can see them each day – office, home, car, etc. From personal experience, having truths from Scripture where I can see them is a great weapon for my mind and heart to trust (and keep trusting) my God in any challenge in life, including cancer.
