With the death of my mother-in-law right before Mother’s Day, I’ve been reflecting on the Goodness of God in the gifts of my mother and mother-in-law to my family and me. Both ladies displayed the beauty of strong beliefs and loving care in different ways to me. Both ladies cherished faith, family, and friends in prayer and tangible helps. Even as both ladies were different from each other in many ways, both pointed me straight to Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life and our hope of glory, forever.
Because of these women, I am thankful to have learned the power of knowing Christ in my strengths and especially in my many weaknesses. For in these weaknesses, I have found a joy and peace that passes all understanding which is able to guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus just like Paul wrote of in Philippians 4:7.
These women didn’t claim perfection; they clung to Jesus. And I want to do the same, on mountaintops and in valleys, even the valley of death which David talked about in Psalm 23.
Psalm 23 NIV
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley [of death],
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever
